For One Night Only – Musical Influences: Scott Joplin

In my latest chapter of For One Night Only, I mentioned that Miss Swan gave Edward the sheet music for two of Scott Joplin’s pieces. While Joplin’s music was considered ahead of his time, the second piece is “The Entertainer,” which he published in 1902. You’re probably familiar with this song, as it was adapted by Marvin Hamlisch for the 1973 movie, “The Sting.” The movie won many Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Song Score or Adaption. For One Night Only – Musical Influences: Scott Joplin

In my latest chapter of For One Night Only, I mentioned that Miss Swan gave Edward the sheet music for two of Scott Joplin’s pieces. The first is “Maple Leaf Rag,” which was published in 1899. It had a profound influence on musicians of that time, including Edward. As an American composer and pianist, Scott Joplin was dubbed the “King of Ragtime,” composing more than forty ragtime pieces. For One Night Only – Musical Influences: John Newton/The Original Sacred Harp Choir

In my latest chapter post of For One Night Only, I mentioned that Miss Swan sings “Amazing Grace,” during church services. This song was originally written in 1772 and published 1779 by English poet and Anglician clergyman, John Newton, but this is one of the first recordings by The Original Sacred Harp Choir in 1922. Since it appealed to a wide audience, later recordings were made by African American “singing preachers” and their congregations. Enjoy! 🎶
